Colombia El Tambo
A tremendously interesting and very sweet cup from the beautiful El Tambo ('the dairy') region in Colombia's cool and mountainous south-west, not far from the better-known Popayán. Classically Colombian in its well-rounded and balanced cup profile, El Tambo defies expectations with sweet and juicy peach and kiwi in the cup, nutmeg and caramel.

As one of the world's best-established coffee growing regions, Colombia has developed a reputation for a rich, balanced and well-rounded profile, heavy on chocolate, that has made it a blend-staple and single origin favourite for many roasters and drinkers. The El Tambo stood out to us as not only a top-quality Colombian, but an unusual one. Straddling a mountain range in Cauca's far south-west, the El Tambo region has a wide diversity of micro-climates and with much of the region's coffee grown by small-holders on very small plots, there is a far higher than average diversity in output.
Colombia's robust coffee industry has been responsible for many of the region's advancements, particularly the national coffee organisation Cenicafe's work on disease resistance coffee varietals, the most successful of which can now be found all over the continent. Two of the varietals included in this lot (Colombia and Castillo) are hybrids developed by Cenicafe, the first in 1982 for disease resistance and the latter more recently in response to the growing threat of coffee leaf rust (roya.)
